Tufted Titmouse

eskerlab

The tufted titmouse (Parus bicolor) is a common, year-round resident at Hogsback Acre. Cheerful is the best way to describe this handsome bird. During the summer months titmice are frequently heard singing their beautiful song from the woods but rarely seen.

During the winter months titmice make frequent visits to both hanging and platform feeders where their preferred food is shelled peanuts. They move very quickly, generally traveling in small groups with 2-3 titmice and 2-3 black capped chickadees. Like the chickadees, they are gleaning feeders, meaning that they land at the feeder, quickly grab the piece of food, and then quickly leave the feeder to eat elsewhere. The video below was filmed in slow motion for a better look at this wonderful animal.
