The Firsts of Spring

The wet cold weather seems to have delayed spring by about 2 weeks. But all the bird and bug activity suddenly blossomed.


Returning migrants included:

  • Baltimore Oriole (May 7)

  • Cedar Waxwing (May 7)

  • Chimney Swift (May 4)

  • Chipping Sparrow (April 23)

  • Nashville Warbler (May 8)

  • Rose-Breasted Grosbeak (April 28)

  • White-Crowned Sparrow (May 2)

  • White-Throated Sparrow (April 19)

  • Yellow Warbler (April 29)

  • Yellow-Rumped Warbler (April 26)

The following species were spotted for the first-time here at Hogsback Acre:

  • Barn Swallow (May 7). This bird was spotted cruising along the driveway.

  • Black-Throated Blue Warbler (May 2). Numerous individuals spotted feeding in sugar maples and in the shrubs next to the house.

  • Wood Thrush (April 23). Two thrush were spotted on the esker.
